RTX 5090 Street Prices Top $9k as Nvidia GPU Costs Climb

Nvidia's flagship GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card now sells for more than $9,000 in the United States, according to an analysis by TechSpot reported by eTeknix. That is a 370% increase over its original recommended price. Other cards in the RTX 50 line have also gotten far more expensive, though reports differ on how much and on what is driving each figure.

The reports appeared on Nov. 3. Most of the numbers describe what retailers and resellers charge, not a price set by Nvidia.

What did the reports find about the RTX 5090?

eTeknix, citing TechSpot, said the card's U.S. price is up 370% from its recommended retail price, or MSRP, and up an average of 262% worldwide. The outlet said the card was already selling for around $3,000 at the end of last year, and that its U.S. price rose 36% in the last month alone.

Shattered.io, summarizing coverage from Windows Report and Wccftech, tied the 370% figure to a lowest available U.S. price of $9,400 in October. It measured that against the card's $1,999 launch price. Shattered.io noted that a lowest-price reading is a snapshot of the cheapest listing on a given day, not what most buyers paid.

Why do the price figures differ between reports?

The sources use different measures. TechSpot's analysis points to a U.S. price above $9,000, while Windows Report's number is $9,400. ZDNET, meanwhile, described the RTX 5090 as carrying a price of about $6,000 at Best Buy, before an increase of nearly $500.

Shattered.io said broad ranges like these usually reflect a mix of retailers, regions, new and used listings, and different board-partner models. It advised treating the figures as a directional signal rather than a precise measurement.

Has Nvidia actually raised its list price?

Reports differ. Shattered.io said Nvidia has not announced a U.S. MSRP increase for the RTX 5090 and that the official price remains $1,999. It said the 370% figure reflects what retailers and resellers charge.

ZDNET reported that Nvidia is notifying users of another price increase on the RTX 50 series this week. It said Nvidia warned in August that the line would see increases of up to 15%. ZDNET described the latest round as the biggest for the 5090, at nearly $500, and said the lower-end 5050 and 5060 would see more modest bumps of $50-60. The article's own summary gives a $30-50 range for the 5050. ZDNET attributed the increases to an AI-driven global memory shortage.

Which other graphics cards are affected?

According to eTeknix, the RTX 5080 sells for 120% above its MSRP in the United States and 77% above globally. In the U.S., the RTX 5070 Ti is 67% above its recommended price and the RTX 5070 is 64% above. Both rose less in October, staying below 10% in most regions.

The RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB has been hit hardest by rising memory costs, eTeknix said. It has twice the memory of the 8 GB version, and its U.S. price is up 84% to around $800. The RTX 5050 has gone from $260 to $420 this year, or 68% above its MSRP.

For reference, Shattered.io listed launch prices of $999 for the RTX 5080, $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti and $549 for the RTX 5070. The RTX 5090 became available Jan. 30, 2025.

Wccftech, as cited by Shattered.io, said every RTX 50 card is up between 40% and 120%. Shattered.io said no source it reviewed confirmed those ranges card by card. eTeknix also said several reports suggest the RTX 5090 is being discontinued, without naming them.

What does this mean for people shopping for a graphics card?

Shoppers are likely to find the official MSRP a poor guide to what cards actually cost. Shattered.io noted that a card listed at $1,999 on Nvidia's site may be effectively unavailable at that price. When street prices rise on a fixed list price, it said, the extra money goes to retailers, resellers and scalpers rather than to Nvidia. No source quantified how much of the premium reaches anyone in the chain.

The squeeze extends well below the flagship. Shattered.io pointed out that few people shop for a card at $9,400, while many buy mid-range models, where premiums above 50% affect far more buyers. eTeknix said October price rises of 20% to 40% hit several regions, with Brazil the only major exception since February.

ZDNET said older RTX 40 and RTX 30 cards would not be directly affected by Nvidia's increase. It warned that resellers might add their own markups or buy up stock to resell on the second-hand market.

Will AMD and Intel raise prices too?

Not immediately, according to ZDNET. It said neither company has commented on price hikes for its graphics cards or plans immediate changes in response to Nvidia. ZDNET added that it expects both could eventually follow as AI data centers absorb more of the available components. That is the outlet's own expectation, not a statement from either company.

eTeknix said the component shortage appears set to continue.
